VDP Weingut S. A. Prüm

The Prüm Family

Saskia Andrea Prüm
Qualified Viti-Cultural Engineer with a vision, heart, and passion for Riesling.

After several years of traveling to many wine-growing regions around the world, she returned to the winery after completing her studies in 2005 and took up a position in sales and organization of the constantly growing company.

Since July 1, 2017, she has been the new owner of the S.A.Prüm Winery and is thus the first female owner to use her initials that precedes the name of the winery. Never before has a Prüm woman owned and headed a winery; another first in the history of the ancient Prüm dynasty.

Raimund Prüm, also known by the locals as “the Red Prüm”, took over the winery from his father in 1971, who died young, and developed it into a top winery with an international reputation. This enabled the winery to grow to its current size, spread over the steepest vineyards in the best locations in the Middle Moselle region, all planted with the best white wine grape varieties of RIESLING. After he had transferred the winery to his daughter Saskia Andrea, he continued to act as the owner of the Wein-& Landhauses, the Country Estate and Guesthouse.

Pirjo Oksanen-Prüm – Export Finland, USA

Centuries-Old Roots

Prüm – this name is inseparably linked to wine-making, especially in the Middle Moselle region. The first references to the Prüm family date back to documents from 1156, which show that the Prüm family owned vineyards.

The founding father and namesake of the winery is Sebastian Alois Prüm (1794-1871). He had seven sons, of whom only Mathias (1835-1890) married. In the middle of the 19th century, Mathias Prüm owned the largest bourgeois winery on the Mosel with around 17 hectares.

Mathias Prüm himself also had seven children – of which named the third after his father, Sebastian Alois Prüm (1877-1959). He founded the S.A.Prüm winery in 1911. His second eldest child, Raimund Prüm (1923-1971), continued to run it as a community of heirs until 1970.

The estate has been managed by Raimund Prüm since 1971. The “Red Prüm”, as he is often called, has made the estate what it is today: one of the best wineries in Germany with international success.

On July 1, 2017, his daughter, Saskia Andrea Prüm, took over the management of the winery and is thus the first female winery owner to carry the name of the winery with her initials.

Still following along? Simply put:
The current owner, Saskia Andrea Prüm, is the great-granddaughter of Sebastian Alois.
He founded the S.A.Prüm Winery in 1911.

By the way:
The famous Wehlen sundial found in the vineyards was built in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm (1807-1876),
the youngest brother of the founding father.
